INTRODUCTION


WHAT IS PULP CAPPING?

Pulp capping is the process of placing a specialized agent in contact with or in close proximity to the pulp with the intention of encouraging formation of new dentin and promote the healing of the pulp.

The treatment objectives for vital pulp therapy include: 

1) Eradication of infection. 
2) Maintenance of tooth/teeth in a state of health. 
3) Capitalization of reparative ability of the pulp.

TWO TYPES OF VITAL PULP THERAPY-

1) Direct Pulp Capping
2) Indirect Pulp Capping

IDEAL REQUIREMENT OF A PULP CAPPING MATERIAL:

To stimulate reparative dentin formation. 
To maintain pulp vitality. 
Bactericidal/ Bacteriostatic. 
Release fluoride to prevent secondary caries. 
Adhere to dentin/ restorative material. 
Resist forces during restoration placement & use. 
Sterile. 
Radiopaque. 
Provide bacterial seal.
